F is for Fantasy Fiction

Yep, I'm doing it too. Well, I'm not sure that other A-Z Blogging Challenge participants will write about fantasy fiction for their F word(s), but I bet many will. I think so because I'm following some wildly creative blogs that explore all manner of fantasy fiction writing.

This is not that type of blog.

I couldn't write a fantasy piece if my life depended on it. Whenever I have a super, never-been-written before idea about a world rich with layers of magical connections, well, once it gets on paper I cringe. I'm missing the boat completely.

I love to read it but don't know how to write it. My favorite fantasy world is Tolkein’s Middle Earth. I also love the worlds C.S Lewis and J.K. Rowling created. I'd lose all cred if I didn't give Stephenie Meyer a nod here. Of course, L. Frank Baum deserves special recognition too.

Don't keep reading if you're looking for fantasy fiction writing tips here.

You've come to the wrong place. I'm turning the tables. I want to know what you think of fantasy fiction? Who are your favorite authors? What are your favorite fantasy stories, books?

If you write fantasy fiction, please include links in the comments section so we can read your stuff. And if you're so inclined, include a few choice tips to help those of us who suck at it need help in this area.

Happy writing.

  1. I actually prefer watching fantasy (or making it up in my head). Maybe because of my age, I'm still so fascinated by all the special effects generated on the big screen. Harry Potter is great to read, but spectacular to see.

  2. I read a lot as a kid but recent stuff seems to be variations on a familiar theme. Nobody of recent times seems to really stand out.

  3. Stephanie Meyers (even though she wrote alot in passive voice and repeated her words) is a favorite along with P.C. and Kristen Cast.

Science fiction fantasy...that would be hard for me to write. I like to keep things simple.

  4. There's so many subgenres of fantasy now. One of my favorites is Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman.

I love writing it, too, but usually stick more to the sci-fi side.

  5. I enjoy reading it but haven't attempted fantasy yet. Will probably stay with my science fiction.
    Hope you're enjoying the Challenge!

  6. I like Arthurian fiction and am partial to T.H. White's series.

I also like supernatural themes but would tend to classify them as horror or supernatural romance as opposed to fantasy.

  7. I used to just read SciFi, but got converted to fantasy (after a foray into the Shannara world by Terry Brooks--http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Elfstones_of_Shannara) with a tale about a boy who lived. I've since read and loved many authors such as Stephenie Meyers, Anne McCaffrey's 'Dragonriders of Pern' (which seemed to be fantasy at first but turned into SciFi), Tolkien, Robert Jordan, Brandon Sanderson ... to name a few.

  8. I'm not much of a fan of fantasy fiction. I like to be a little wept away when I read, and somehow, that stuff never does it for me.

  9. As a writer of fantasy, I love fantasy fiction. It would be weird if I wasn't. Well, I love most of it. I prefer series that have some gravitas to it. George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series is probably the best one I've read.

  10. Tolkien is my all time favorite. I really haven't read much fantasy fiction outside of that, certainly no other names stick with me. lol I'm a romance, supernatural, mystery girl.

  11. I mostly like the sci-fi side of fantasy fiction. As for writing it, well I dabble here and there in between non-fiction.

  12. I guess fantasy fiction isn't my thing. I only recognized one name on your list, and I bet you can guess which one.

  13. I am not a huge fantasy fiction reader (and I most certainly do not write it). But I do like J.K. Rowling--though it is likely cliche to say that. I also like C.S. Lewis and Tolkein. Did not like Meyer's writing style, but her idea certainly was a good one.

  14. I'm not a big fantasy fan, Harry Potter aside. I have tried to get into a few fantasy books but I can't seem to take to them :(

  15. I'm not big on fantasy, but I admire writers who have the ability to create entire worlds and make up the rules that govern them. Writing a story like that would feel like drudgery to me. Ok, so I admit I'm a lazy sod.
